For the study tour of December 22, 2024, Ms. Lu Ming-yun led 29 ARF interns and their parents on a trip to Tianliao Moon World and Mei Nung Yao in Kaohsiung. The first stop of the day was Tianliao Moon World in Kaohsiung. Surrounded by mountains, Tianliao features a vast expanse of volcanic mud, which appears ashy gray due to long-term rain erosion and sun exposure, giving it a barren, moon-like surface — the origin of its name. Introducing the geological properties and their formation, the tour guide first explained the properties of mudstone and then allowed interns to carefully observe and explore the spectacular landscape themselves. As everyone ambled along the badland trail and climbed the skywalk, the view became increasingly expansive. The clearly visible winding ridges and gullies formed a spectacular geological landscape. The sharp contrast between the magnificent view and familiar mountain greenery amazed us with the wonders of nature. Unique plants along the way added to the fascination. Carefully explaining the ecological characteristics of plants, the tour guide engaged interns more deeply through questions and interaction. Before leaving, everyone got to savor unique mudstone ice cream. Besides its eye-catching gray-black appearance, its refreshing and smooth texture provided an unusual taste experience, leaving a deep impression.

The next stop was Meinong Folk Village, where everyone enjoyed an authentic Hakka-style lunch. The architecture of Meinong Folk Village is a combination of tobacco-curing chambers and courtyard houses. The village features abundant Hakka culture and delicious food. After lunch, everyone went off to explore the village individually. In the afternoon, everyone proceeded to Mei Nung Yao, which is well known for its unique firing techniques and exquisite workmanship. Exuding an artistic ambiance, the ceramic workshop displays many beautiful ceramic artworks. Everyone was shown images of two public ceramic relief murals by Dr. Chu Pang-hsiung. Cleverly blending traditional craftwork and modern design, and infused with rich culture of Meinong, the murals have become symbols of local culture. Embellishing public spaces, they not only demonstrate the beauty of art but also express hopes and wishes for the community. Everyone also learned basic techniques and tips for hand-kneading pottery, and experienced the fun of seeing the clay take shape in their hands. While highly challenging, the process of shaping clay also gave everyone a sense of accomplishment. Everyone was deeply focused on their work, hoping that their finished works would have unique colors and patterns. The experience taught everyone techniques of pottery as well as the warmth and value of craftsmanship. As the day's activities came to an end, everyone looked forward to the next study tour on the journey home.
