Sketch of Archilife Study Tour, November 2024
2024年11月份見識之旅縮影 ![]() For the study tour of November 16, 2024, Ms. Lu Ming-yun led 10 ARF interns and their parents on a trip to learn about taro agrifood education and towel-making in Yunlin. The first stop in the morning was the Linnei Teaching Taro Department. Led by farm owner Mr. Lin Chien-an, everyone entered a taro plantation to observe different stages of taro's growth. Taro is widely cultivated in the paddy fields of Linnei. Despite its short history, taro nourished by dark soil from Zhuoshui River has gained increasing fame in recent years, earning the proper name "Linnei taro" as distinguished from the more commonly known "Dajia taro". Mr. Lin also demonstrated how to select and store taro, sharing that the secret to avoiding itchy hands while peeling taro is to keep both hands and the taro dry during handling. Following this, everyone participated in making DIY dorayaki with taro filling. The melt-in-your-mouth, smooth, and rich taro paste, sandwiched between two sweet pancake layers, was unforgettably delicious. ![]() In the afternoon, everyone visited My Puppets – Puppet Cultural and Creative Park in Dounan Township. Guided by CEO Mr. Hsu Chien-chang, everyone formed a deeper understanding of the evolution of puppets, types of characters, making of related accessories, and the innovative efforts involved in puppet design. To promote traditional puppet culture, tremendous effort is devoted to creating a wide variety of designs, such as flexible hand mechanisms for holding weapons, customized Styrofoam puppet heads for explosion scenes, and luminous paint to enhance puppet details during night-time performances. Everyone was fascinated by the exhibition of puppet works that have won major prizes over the years. The story of past puppet designers, presented through "kamishibai" – storytelling with illustrated paper cards, by Mr. Hsu's daughter also left a deep impression. During the DIY activity, Mr. Hsu provided detailed explanations on crafting a puppet's head and offered step-by-step instructions to help everyone perfect the faces of their puppets. He also explained the headwear and costumes of the puppets, and encouraged everyone to continue their unique puppet designs at home. ![]() At the next destination – SL Towel Industrial Tourism & Explore Factory in Huwei Township, everyone observed the operation of a weaving machine through a glass window, learning the production process of towels, from raw materials to thread weaving. The tour guide further explained how to identify healthy towels from color, smell, and product label, reminded everyone of the recommended frequency for changing towels and provided tips on how to choose and care for them. During the DIY activity, everyone learned how to fold, flip, and adjust a printed towel to make a cute cake shape. While towels are often regarded as merely essential everyday items, everyone was fascinated by the realistic-looking cakes, ice creams, small animals, and potted plants made from the myriad designs and foldable nature of towels. As the day's tour came to an end, everyone took a group photo before heading back home and looked forward to the next study tour. |
