On the way to the airport, President Lin Chun-shin reminded delegation besides continually understanding and learning from the progress and achievements in SB-related areas from other countries, it is necessary to begin fostering a group of international elite of great potential and worthy of long-term partnership by following the step of generation change of ARF so as to deploy a robust and meticulous international network for the next generation. Later on, Secretary General Huang Chin-ying, Prof. Su Ching-hua, Mr. Wang Wen-an, and Mr. Hsiao Ruey-lin also made their speeches to wish great success so as not to frustrate the public. After meeting up with other delegation from southern Taiwan, all delegation shook hands with President Lin Chun-shin and took Evergreen flight BR315 to Australia. After transiting in Brisbane, the delegation arrived in Melbourne at 1:00pm on September 18, 2008.
Located beside the Yarra River and about 5km from Phillip Bay, Melbourne was established during the Victorian gold rush in the 19th century and has been rapidly developed into the Australian cultural, sport, recreational, and food center today. At present, many brilliantly built buildings in the Victorian style are still found in the city where there are parks with flourishing trees and plants everywhere. It is the most European city in Australia and known as the famous garden city.
As there was no time to explore the culture and customs of Melbourne during the conference period, Secretary General Huang Chin-ying arranged a Melbourne city tour immediately after leaving the airport. St. Patrick's Cathedral, the largest church in Australia, was the first stop. Designed in 1863 by famous British architect William Wardell and built in the 19th century, this Roman Catholic cathedral is a leading example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture, with a 103m tall steeple. The three steeples were not completed until 1939 to commemorate the centenary of the Roman Catholic Church in Victoria. There is a rich collection of various crafts, including the glamorous vitraux (stained glass windows), exquisite wood sculptures and stone sculpture crafts, to make the magnificence and solemnity of the cathedral stand out and to present the architectural style and splendor of the Renaissance.
Next, the delegation visited Fitzroy Garden, the largest park in Melbourne, and Captain Cook's Cottage. Fitzroy Garden occupies an area of 65 hectares. Inside the park, there are verdant trees everywhere, and nurseries, greenhouses, fountains, ponds, footpaths, and sculptures are beautifully planned. The most important attraction in the park, Captain Cook's Cottage is the track of the childhood of Captain James Cook. Sir Russell Grimwade bought the cottage built in 1775 in Great Ayton by Captain Cook's parents as a gift for the centenary of Victoria. What is noteworthy is that the cottage was disassembled in its location in Yorkshire before being transported to Melbourne; even the ivy on the roof was imported from Yorkshire. Later on, the delegation followed the local custom of taking the City Circle Train for an urban tour to experience and blend into the urban Melbournian life.
