On May 23, 2026, Ms. Lu Ming-yun led 17 ARF interns and their parents to explore innovative industries and furniture woodworking in Tainan. The first stop was Home Tech Hydrogel Tourism Factory in Rende District. Designed around energy efficiency, carbon reduction and environmental protection, the facility uses negative-pressure fans to keep the interior comfortable even in summer. Visiting the aroma, heat therapy and electrotherapy zones, everyone learned that hydrogels may be physical, biological or chemical. Their raw materials are mostly powders or liquids that gel with water, heat or specific ingredients, and are widely used in aroma gels, grass jelly, hot/cold packs and electrode patches. Mascot displays showed that hydrogels expand when absorbing water, shrink when dried and are biodegradable. During the aroma gel DIY activity, interns chose scents and designs, stirred the materials, added oxidizing and reducing agents in sequence, and poured the mixture into molds to set. As the gels were still hot after demolding, the packages remained unsealed temporarily to maintain quality. Everyone left the fascinating hydrogel world with new knowledge and their special "hot potatoes" in hand. In the afternoon, everyone learned about the history and craftsmanship of wooden furniture at the Furniture Manufacturing Eco-Museum in Tainan. Established in 2005 at the former site of Yung Shing Furniture(founded in 1958), the museum promotes woodworking art and operates the Lu Ban Woodwork School to train woodworking talents. A huge map showed Taiwan's furniture industry, while many exhibits used traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, securely assembled without nails through skilled craftsmanship. Everyone learned that the reception chairs in the Presidential Office Building's Green Hall were also crafted by Yung Shing Furniture. Those currently in use are an improved version, while earlier chairs are displayed at the museum. During the cypress rose DIY activity, everyone first practiced with foam strips because thin cypress strips could break when repeatedly bent. After mastering the technique, they folded and rolled the cypress strips into shape. With careful guidance, the interns and parents completed fragrant cypress roses. At the final stop, Eminent Interactive Luggage World in Guiren District, everyone watched a video about its own brand "eminent" and its European development, bringing stylish, practical luggage designs worldwide. The guide then introduced the production process from design and material selection to assembly, along with trendy front-opening suitcases and high-tech models with built-in chargers. A video on luggage evolution showed how bags and suitcases reflect changes in travel and transportation. The interns learned that even a small innovation, such as adding wheels to a suitcase, can greatly improve life. Covering topics from hydrogels to furniture and luggage, the study tour introduced the science, creative designs and manufacturing techniques behind everyday products. As the day ended, everyone gathered to take a group photo before the journey home and looked forward to the next study tour. |
