For the study tour of August 3, 2025, Ms. Lu Ming-yun led 27 ARF interns and their parents on a trip to explore Yangmingshan's Sapphire Spring and Beitou's cultural history. Along Tianmu Historic Trail in Yangmingshan, the tour guide offered everyone some magnets and the interns were surprised those magnets could stick to the rock wall. Everyone learned that andesite rock formed by Datun Volcano Group contains iron, which attracts magnet. High density of andesite rock gives Caoshan Water System its natural advantage, allowing rainwater to filter through layers of sand and rock. Water gushing out from gaps in the rock is pristine and has mineral content for drinking without special treatment. After walking down more than 200 steps, everyone finally arrived at Yongquan Terrace, which is the third water source for Caoshan Water System. Containing hypersthene and pyroxenite, the spring water gleams blue like sapphire in the sunlight. Everyone eagerly took out their water bottles to fill them with spring water from a tap nearby. Through the tour guide's explanation and actual tasting, everyone learned to appreciate the pristine beauty of the century-old water, and to understand the history and story behind it. Everyone proceeded to Grass Mountain Chateau for lunch around noon. Built during the Japanese Occupation, it was originally Taiwan Sugar Corporation's private club and was later used to formally welcome Japan's crown prince. When the KMT government relocated to Taiwan, President Chiang Kai-shek once used it as a temporary presidential office and received many foreign dignitaries, including General MacArthur. Despite the changing times, the building has retained its Japanese-style appearance. Today, it serves as Taipei City Government's art venue. It frequently hosts exhibitions and has a restaurant, making it a new landmark of history and culture. Everyone viewed exhibits and listened to stories about the relics, further understanding its cultural value in modern day. In the afternoon, everyone visited Beitou Museum, which used to be one of the most luxurious hot spring hotels during the Japanese Occupation. A night's stay costed $6 when the monthly salary of a civil servant was only $18 at that time. Historical and architectural features of the museum include the elegant "shoin-zukuri" style, a nostalgic bathing pool, and the tearoom where the literati gathered and enjoyed tea. Wooden structures within the museum are built using traditional Japanese wood joinery whereby pieces of wood are joined together without using nails. Wooden tools were provided on-site for everyone to try this woodworking technique. As the day's activities came to an end, everyone gathered for a group photo. Interns and their parents learned about Yangmingshan's volcano and geological conditions, hot spring during the Japanese Occupation and Beitou's post-war historical and cultural characteristics. It is hoped that the next tour will be another experience of Taiwan's beautiful nature and culture. |
