At the start of the day's activities, team leader Ms. Lu Ming-yun reminded everyone about things to note and what to observe, and gave the interns some background knowledge.
The day's itineraries began with a visit to Zhen Fang Mullet Roe Factory in Qianzhen in the morning. Led by the tour guide, everyone first went to the audio/video area in the second floor to learn the history of the factory. The factory has grown from its humble beginning as a tiny store of just under 7 square meters to a sophisticated mullet roe factory today with standard manufacturing procedure and dual certification for foods safety. After watching the video presentation, the tour guide showed everyone the production line and processing of fresh mullet roe through a glass partition. From teaching displays and hand-drawn cards in the factory, everyone also learned about mullet-related facts and folk stories, and how to differentiate between real and fake mullet roe by examining blood vessels on the mullet roe under a light. The entire explanation was conducted in a fun and lively atmosphere, and there were frequent quiz questions where those who answered correctly were given small packets of mullet roe made for instant consumption. The guided tour ended with a DIY activity where interns and their parents learn to make mullet roe rice balls. The steps for making the triangular rice snacks were easy to master and memorable.
After enjoying a sumptuous lunch, it was time to visit the YM Museum of Marine Exploration Kaohsiung (MOME) in Qijin. Established by Yang Ming Cultural Foundation, the museum is specially built to look like a two-story cruise ship. Within the museum are exhibits related to marine culture and ship structures. The tour guide began by explaining the evolutionary history of ships. Using projector images, the tour guide introduced battle formation and characteristics of ships during the period of Three Kingdoms, and provided everyone with a deeper understanding of marine operation with exhibits in the museum. Afterwards, everyone took a ride to the nearby Cijin Shell Museum for a visit. Despite being a small museum, it houses a myriad variety of seashells, making it the largest seashell museum in Southeast Asia today. After a brief introduction by the tour guide, explaining the living environment of less common seashells and methods for collecting seashells, everyone had further understanding of how seashells are categorized and how to differentiate them. At the end of the tour, everyone boarded the bus to Taipei after taking a group photo and looked forward to the next study tour.
