For the study tour of May 25, 2025, Ms. Lu Ming-yun led 23 ARF interns and their parents on a trip to explore the scenery of Keelung Islet and landscape of the port city. While waiting for the ferry at Badouzi Fishing Harbor, the tour guide introduced its history, geographical environment and development. The poor sea conditions that day made the boat sway violently, creating a thrilling and memorable voyage. After arriving at Keelung Islet, everyone was greeted by a rock shaped like a dragon's head upon disembarkation, and learned about the islet's native plants, coastal ecosystem and various rock formations while hiking along the coastal trail. Due to unstable weather, steps leading up the islet's lighthouse were wet and slippery, making the climb especially challenging for younger interns. Helping each other, most members managed to reach the top and were rewarded with a spectacular view of boundless sea and sky. Before leaving, the ferry cruised around the islet, allowing the captain to introduce the volcanic geology and unique rock formations, and point out the distant Heping Island and nearby reefs, providing an abundance of geological knowledge.
In the afternoon, everyone proceeded to Xin 2nd Road Air-Raid Shelter for a tour led by a guide from Keelung Historiography Association. Originally meant "chicken coop", Keelung's name was later changed to mean "rich and prosperous land". Due to its geographical position, the city had been a strategic spot contested by many foreign political powers. With policy implementation and port development, Keelung gradually became a crucial port city in northern Taiwan. Toward the end of the Japanese Occupation, the authorities began constructing many air-raid shelters, and requisitioned private residences and land, to prevent air raids and protect key military facilities and rich Japanese residents. Besides providing refuges, some shelters were used as temporary command centers. The shelter we visited was a cool and humid cave; dim yellow light reflecting off stone walls evoked a nostalgic and mysterious atmosphere, taking one back in time to the era of war-time uncertainty and tension. Next, everyone took the lift up to Keelung Martyrs' Shrine halfway up a hill. Built during the Japanese Occupation, it still retains some of its stone foundation even after multiple reconstructions, giving it a unique look of mixed culture. Later, visiting Keelung Tower – whose design is inspired by a bridge crane, everyone had a bird's eye view of passing ships and modern buildings. Historical memories and modern appearance took everyone through a verical journey, connecting a collage of history, nature and the city.
The last stop brought everyone to Itai Sanitary Ware Tourism Factory. Besides appreciating diverse designs, everyone tried out equipment that combined technology and the concept of health, and enjoyed healthy pineapple ice, experiencing the innovativeness and thoughtfulness of modern healthcare while relaxing their minds and bodies. As the day's activities came to an end, everyone looked forward to the next study tour on the journey home.
